docBUILDER Tutorial Text

Welcome to this demonstration of NASA’s Global Change Master Directory docBUILDER Authoring Tool. This demonstration will show you how to use the docBUILDER authoring tool to create a metadata document that can be searched and accessed in the GCMD. The tool can also be used to modify existing metadata documents.

To create a new metadata document, click the “Add To GCMD” tab from the homepage. Then click the “Create or modify a Data set description” link and use the already “selected” Document Status, “Create a new document”. Then type in a “Document Identifier” of your choice. [Click on the underscored “Document Identifier” for specifications. This “Document Identifier” becomes the “Entry_ID” for your data set description.] Then click “Continue”. Please note that you may retrieve your document at any time in the future using this Entry_ID.

Note the colored-coded boxes to the left of each field: red denotes a required field; yellow - a recommended field; and green - an optional field. Also note the “i”, which provides detailed information for each field.

Now click “Entry Title”, enter a descriptive title for the data set, and click “Continue”.

Next, click “Science Keywords” and select keywords related to the data set. You can type a keyword of your choice in the “Search the list” box to narrow the list or directly select a topic keyword or multiple keywords. Click “Continue”.

The “ISO Topic Category” field will be automatically populated based on the Science Keywords you previously selected; although the field remains unchecked in docBUILDER. Alternatively, you may also manually populate these ISO keywords.

Notice when you select “Continue” after populating each field, your record is automatically saved.

Next, click “Data Center”. Check first to see if your data center already exists - by selecting from the controlled “Data Center Name Lookup” keyword list. Search the list by beginning to type a name in the box or directly select a data center from the list and click “Accept”. If the data center does not exist, please enter a new Short Name/Long Name.

Next, click on the “Find Data Center Contact” to search and select a Data Center contact from the list. Click “Accept”. (pause) If the data center contact does not exist, please enter a new contact.

Notice that some fields are repeatable. A green "+" button allows you to insert additional entries. A red "–" button allows you to delete all the information in the field. {Click on the + and – to illustrate how the fields collapse.} Click “Continue” when you are finished populating the Data Center information.

Next click “Summary” to add a brief descriptive summary of the data set. You may paste text from other applications into this box. After adding a descriptive summary, click “Continue”.

At this point, you have completed all the required fields. The metadata document can be validated and sent to the GCMD for review and incorporation into the database. However, we encourage you to complete all fields for which information is available to enhance the description and subsequently aid in the discovery of your data set. To do so, simply click each field to populate, and click “Continue” to add each addition. Several “Recommended” fields hold controlled keywords than may prove helpful in assisting users in their search. Those strongly recommended are Spatial Coverage, Location, Project, Instrument, Platform and Data Resolution. If you have a direct link to your data or service, please include it in the Related URL field and set the URL Content Type to GET DATA or GET SERVICE.

To validate the document, click “Validate Document” under the “Document” menu. A report on the validation of the metadata document will be returned to you.

To submit the document, click “Submit Document” under the “Document” menu. Supply a valid email address, and click “OK”.

For additional information on the tool, click “docBUILDER User’s Guide” under the “Help” menu.

In conclusion, this demonstration illustrated the use of the docBUILDER authoring tools to create metadata records. This tool can also be used to create descriptions for services, instruments, platforms, projects, and data centers. This concludes this demonstration of NASA’s Global Change Master Directory. Thank you.
