SAPHIR Ancillary Description
Quality The major sources of systematic errors in these algorithms are the quality of the a-priori database, and the estimate of the model uncertainties that are needed to construct a Bayesian algorithm. Some error can also be introduced by the ancillary information (surface type, surface temperature, and total precipitable water) used to subset the a-priori database in the algorithm. Because passive microwave signatures at the pixel level represent primarily integrated quantities, neither the vertical structure nor the near-surface precipitation from radiometers are typically as good as their radar counterparts. Solutions are also smoothed by the Bayesian scheme, leading to fewer extremes relative to a radar.
