Platform /Instrument

Definition

The name of the platform used to acquire/measure the data. Subfields include Instrument and Sensor information in a hierarchical structure along with subfields to capture additional associated information.

Platform: The name of the platform/source used to acquire the data.

  • <Characteristics>The characteristics of platform's specific attributes.
    • <Name>The name of the characteristic attribute.
    • <Description>Description of the Characteristic attribute.
    • <DataType>The datatype of the Characteristic/attribute.
    • <Unit>Units associated with the Characteristic attribute value.
    • <Value>The value of the Characteristic attribute.

Instrument: The name of the instrument used to acquire the data.

  • <Technique> The instrument technique.
  • <NumberOfSensors> Number of sensors used on the instrument when acquiring the granule data.
  • <Characteristics> The characteristics of this instrument expressed as custom attributes. The characteristic names must be unique on this instrument; however the names do not have to be unique across instruments.
    • <Name>The name of the characteristic attribute.
    • <Description>Description of the Characteristic attribute.
    • <DataType>The datatype of the Characteristic/attribute.
    • <Unit>Units associated with the Characteristic attribute value.
    • <Value>The value of the Characteristic attribute.
  • <OperationalMode>The operation mode applied on the instrument when acquire the granule data.

Sensor: The name of the sensor on the instrument used to acquire the data.

  • <Technique> The instrument technique.
  • <Characteristics> The characteristics of this sensor expressed as custom attributes. The characteristic names must be unique on this sensor; however the names do not have to be unique across sensors.
    • <Name>The name of the characteristic attribute.
    • <Description>Description of the Characteristic attribute.
    • <DataType>The datatype of the Characteristic/attribute.
    • <Unit>Units associated with the Characteristic attribute value.
    • <Value>The value of the Characteristic attribute.

Usage
  • <Platform> is a required field and may be repeated
    • <Type> is a required subfield and should be one of the following Platform Type Enumerations: Aircraft;Balloons/Rockets;Earth Observation Satellites;In Situ Land-based Platforms;In Situ Ocean-based Platforms;Interplanetary Spacecraft;Maps/Charts/Photographs;Models/Analyses;Navigational Platforms;Solar/Space Observation Satellites;Space Stations/Manned Spacecraft.
    • <Short_Name> and <Long_Name> must be selected from the controlled set of Platform keywords. However, new platform identifiers may only be added if the platform does not already appear in the Platform Keyword List.
    • The <Short_Name> is usually an abbreviated version of the <Long_Name>. When submitting a new <Short_Name>, always check the Platform Keyword List to ensure mutual exclusivity among platform short names. No two platforms may have the same <Short_Name>.
  • <Instrument> is a required subfieldfield and may be repeated
    • <Short_Name> and <Long_Name> must be selected from the controlled set of Instrument keywords. However, new instrument identifiers may only be added if the instrument does not already appear in the Instrument Keyword List.
  • <Sensor> is a highly recommended subfield and may be repeated.
    • <Short_Name> and <Long_Name> must be selected from the controlled set of Sensor keywords. However, new sensor identifiers may only be added if the sensor does not already appear in the Sensor Keyword List.
  • <Characteristics> is an optional subfield under each level of the hierarchy (Platform/Instrument/Sensor) and may be repeated. If <Characteristics> is populated, all sub-fields are required.
  • <Technique> is an optional subfield under <Instrument> and <Sensor> and may be repeated
  • <NumberOfSensors> is an optional subfield under <Instrument> and should be an integer value representing the number of sensors on the intrument
  • <OperationalMode> is an optional subfield under <Instrument>
